Alhaurin de la Torre has been preparing for Callejea – the town’s largest event to celebrate the community coming together – scheduled for Saturday 24 January. Tied to the festivities honouring the local patron saint, San Sebastián, the free, all-day celebration transforms the streets into a lively festival of music, workshops, exhibitions, and community engagement, running from 11am until around midnight.

The popularity of the event has led to a major upgrade this year. Calle Reales Alcazares is the new venue for this year’s festival. It will accommodate larger crowds while improving safety. The previous location, Plaza de San Francisco, was too small.

The most popular and loved Spanish bands

Callejea, the first music festival in Malaga for the year, brings together local artists and established national acts. The main stage, now at the Recinto Ferial, features headline performances by renowned groups: the iconic Spanish mestizaje rockers La Cabra Mecánica, the energetic rising stars Morochos (a flamenco-pop duo famous for feel-good sounds), and the popular Gibraltarian pop-rock band Melón Diesel. Radio 3 favorites We Are Not DJs close out the evening.

Local flavour comes on the secondary stage in Plaza Concejal José González Velasco, in the form of local acts including Mr Proper (90s classics), Fitopaldis, Chanwei, Lady Shakes (funk, soul, and rock), and closer Jil Jilala. Bauer and other performers round out the street concert series.

Families and communities are emphasized

In addition to music, this event places a strong emphasis on community and family. Highlights of the event include workshops for kids and teens, a circus called Punto de encuentro (Point of Meeting), storytelling sessions and a children’s play area from 4pm until 10pm. The local associations present their cultural, social and neighbourhood activities through performances and stands.

Callejea is a celebration of the street life we all enjoyed as children, while also promoting community. The official social media pages of the event provide full details including maps and schedules.
