Calls grow to rename Avenida Julio Iglesias in Marbella’s Puerto Banus after legendary singer’s sex assault and trafficking allegations

Avenida Iglesias, in Puerto Banus of Marbella, is being renamed after the sex abuse and human trafficking accusations against legendary singer Julio Iglesias

After accusations of sexual abuse and human trafficking, pressure is increasing on the Marbella authorities. They are being urged to strip Julio Iglesias off his local honours.

Avenida Julio Iglesias, a prestigious thoroughfare in the Puerto Banus marina and a place of prime importance, has been named after the singer since 2002.

Iglesias was honoured in 1997 with a star along the Puerto Banus Boulevard of Fame. Iglesias has been a frequent visitor to the Costa del Sol for many years and also owns an Ojen mansion.

The Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Dominican Republic are alleging that Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has been involved in sexual assaults and human trafficking.

Local politicians, however, argue that the tributes no longer hold water after reports by elDiario.es stating two former employees had filed complaints alleging abuse in his homes in Dominican Republic, and Bahamas.

The opposition party Izquierda Unida (IU) has demanded the ‘urgent’ removal of the singer’s name from one of the most famous streets in Puerto Banus.

Victoria Morales is the IU spokesperson for Marbella and she has challenged the Partido Popular administration to act immediately.

“The removal of Avenida Julio Iglesias in Puerto Banus should be urgent,” she said, issuing a direct challenge to the local leadership: “Is the mayor (Angeles Muñoz) committed to the fight against sexist violence?”

A growing number of people are calling for the renaming of Avenida Julio Iglesias, in Puerto Banus, Marbella.

Toni Morillas is the coordinator of the coalition for the left.

Marbella’s corrupt past is reflected in the street sign.

It was inaugurated on August 16, 2002, by the late, disgraced mayor Julian Muñoz (no relation to current mayor) during the controversial GIL party era.

At the time, former mayor Muñoz claimed the town wanted to show its ‘affection’ for the Latin superstar.
