Benalmadena has entered a new era in tourism development, with the launch of the Observatorio de Turismo. This collaborative body brings together residents, local businesses and experts to shape the town’s future.
In its first session, the observatory unanimously prioritized a thorough makeover of Castillo El Bil-Bil. A neo-Arabic icon that is symbolic of Benalmadena. The historic landmark welcomes 20,000 visitors a year and serves as Benalmadena’s tourist centre.
The proposed transformation is more than just aesthetics. It has real and tangible benefits for all. By replacing the outdated balustrades and installing sleek steel railings in maritime style, the project will improve safety and accessibility while creating a more classy visual link between castle and seafront promenade.
There are more pedestrian areas and drop-off zones at the beach
The conversion of blue zone parking in front of Castle into drop-off/pick-up zones is a major improvement for everyday life. This change will ease congestion for families heading to the beach, reduce the summer’s never-ending circling traffic, and make the area more pedestrian-friendly – something local residents have long been calling for.
It is also ideal to bury unsightly containers of waste, eliminating the visual clutter and foul odours which have marred a popular tourist spot. The new guidelines for unifying commercial façades will help small businesses create a shopping area that is inviting and cohesive. This will encourage people to spend more time there.
Public squares for social events and seafront events
The negotiations to open an under-used private plaza as a meeting place for the community are the most intriguing. This green oasis offers shaded seating, event space and play areas. It would give residents a new place to gather socially just steps away from the ocean.
With the castle itself undergoing an €827,000 interior upgrade to become a modern cultural venue, the surrounding remodel makes sure the entire zone evolves together.
Backed by the town’s 2025–2030 Strategic Tourism Plan, the observatory promises ongoing resident input, seeing that growth serves the community first.
