Malaga Halts horse drawn carriage rides The city council of Malaga has banned the use of horse-drawn carriages in the city, citing concerns about animal welfare.

Malaga’s streets will no longer see horse drawn carriages.  On Monday, the mayor of the city announced an immediate ban on the sale and confirmed that a deal had been reached between the licensed operators.

Francisco De la Torre said “As of today, Monday 6th October, there will be no horse drawn carriages as tourist transportation in Malaga. We took this step to protect the animals’ welfare and safety.  The 25 carriages still operating in the city will be stopped.  The City Council reached an agreement with license holders.”

Compensation for Carriage Operators

Each of the operators has been paid €125,380 as compensation The closure of their businesses.  In the city, there were 25 licensed horse operators and 61 horses.

It is still too early to decide the fate of 61 working horses.  Spain’s “Animalist Party” PACMA The group demands that the horses be given a dignified pension and suggests the creation of municipal spaces for the horses to live.  PACMA offered to help relocate some of the horses into private sanctuaries, rescue centres and a sanctuary.
