Tabernas, a desert oasis located just 20 minutes outside the provincial capital Almeria is an unforgettable destination. This Andalusian town is more than just the legendary film sets which made it famous. It offers a unique experience that combines culture, tradition and flavour with adventure.

A walk through the historic quarter immerses you in centuries of culture. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación – a 16th century jewel of the Mudéjar architecture – stands on the Glorieta de España as a testimony to its religious heritage. Around the church, several chapels, and the Terrera Ventura interpretive centre, reveal an even remoter past, with Neolithic ancestry.

This route ends at a medieval castle that has been declared a cultural asset. It offers breathtaking views of Sierra Alhamilla and the Tabernas Desert, particularly at sunset.

Tabernas is a place where cinema is a part of its DNA. It was the perfect location for over 300 films. Many of these were legendary examples of western genre. MiniHollywood Oasys, Fort Bravo Texas Hollywood and other theme parks combine film memorabilia with entertainment. Visitors can see original sets, Western shows, movie museum, themed restaurants, pools, and even zoological reserves.

Oasys MiniHollywood consists of two distinct areas. The Western village is a western-style village, and the zoological park has more than 800 different animal species. In the village there are several entertainment areas including a cinema museum in a bank building, exhibition halls, and a cemetery.

A professional stunt actor performs a western show. You can enjoy live action scenes for 20 minutes. These include gunfights, galloping horse, duels, high falls and recreating bank robbery.

Fort Bravo Texas Hollywood has faithfully recreated the period. The American town is complete with saloons, banks, shops, and stables. The Mexican area, with its squares, churches, peasants’ homes, and grand estates, is also authentic. Fort Bravo was the name of the cavalry-fort.

The desert plain was discovered by Italian director Sergio Leone while he was searching for locations for a spaghetti western. He built the village, which still stands today. It has been used in many films and television commercials.

Fort Bravo’s western shows, animals and services will transport you back to the past. The theme park can be found in the Tabernas Desert, only two kilometers from the town.

On this set, stars like Claudia Cardinale Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef have filmed. Families and film enthusiasts enjoy the dusty atmosphere of the old west. In addition, every October the Almería Western Film Festival is held here – the only festival in Europe dedicated exclusively to westerns, making the town a must for lovers of the seventh art.

Tabernas Desert, unique in Europe and part of Natura 2000, has a high ecological and geological importance. Its eroded terrains, its flora adapting to the extreme climate, and its ornithological riches make it a fascinating natural area.

Signposted routes and guided routes are available on foot, off road or on horseback. They allow you to explore your surroundings with respect and in depth. La Serrata’s dawn walk is a photographic and sensory delight. During sunsets, you can enjoy horseback rides to observe the play of the sun’s light on the earth as well as the infinite sky.
