Emergency crews confirmed a woman’s death early Monday, July 6 in the morning after a truck struck her on the A-7 motorway near Mijas, in yet another fatal incident on this notoriously dangerous stretch of Costa del Sol road.
What happened in Mijas on the A-7?
Witnesses alerted Spain’s 112 emergency services at 5.20am Monday, July 6 to the fact that a female had been struck by a lorry on kilometer 1,027 of A-7 heading toward Marbella. The 061 emergency health service and Guardia Civil traffic police officers rushed to the scene, but were only able to confirm the woman’s death. Investigators have not yet revealed her age, nationality, or identity.
The road along this stretch is a concern
The tragic accident on Monday is the latest in a series of horrific accidents that have occurred along this section of highway. In April, an accident at mile 1,028 near Mijas in the direction Fuengirola killed a man. It was called “dark Easter Sunday” because a second fatality had occurred in Malaga the same evening.
A 54-year-old motorcyclist, who was discovered on the road in Mijas at 10.45pm, died after a late-night accident. Guardia Civil officials were unable save him despite an immediate response.
A motorcyclist was killed in the early morning hours of the day while exiting the A-7 at the kilometer 1,024, proving that this intersection-filled corridor is still claiming lives.
Investigations continue
Guardia Civil opened an investigation into the fatal accident that occurred this morning, but authorities have not released many details. Road safety campaigners repeatedly highlight the A-7 in Mijas, citing high traffic volumes, poor illumination and pedestrian access points on a route designed around fast-moving cars.
Investigators will provide more information once they have established the full circumstances surrounding this crash.
