You might want to look into this if you still have an old phone. WhatsApp confirmed that the app won’t work on some older Android and iPhone devices after November 1, 2025. This includes those that are running software more than 10 years old.

WhatsApp has been working hard to enhance security and introduce features that are simply not compatible with older devices.

WhatsApp will no longer support older phones

The move, according to the company is needed to protect users’ privacy and to ensure that the platform remains secure for all.
WhatsApp’s new features are not supported by older smartphones that can no longer update their system. This leaves them more susceptible to security breaches and privacy risks.

While it may be frustrating to lose your trusted device, the goal is still to keep your conversations and accounts encrypted.
As WhatsApp put it, it’s not about leaving users behind – it’s about ensuring everyone can use the app safely and efficiently.

What users should do before the cutoff date

You still have plenty of time to backup your media and chats if you own these phones before November. You can transfer your data or save it in the cloud.

Users are reminded by tech experts that such updates are common for apps that handle sensitive information. WhatsApp and other messaging apps require layers of encryption. Older phones can’t handle the security features like two-step verification or encryption.

If you still use a Galaxy S3 phone or iPhone 5, then it’s time to upgrade. Not just for WhatsApp – but for your own digital safety.
