On Wednesday, the Spanish Interior Ministry launched the MiDNI App. It is hoped that this will make the lives of millions easier.
The app can be activated the following day by anyone who has a valid DNI.
All private and public companies must accept the digital ID card in the same manner as they do the traditional ID card.
As long as there is an internet connection, the system allows users to verify their identity in person using their mobile phones.
The card can be used for everyday tasks, such as checking in at hotels, picking up parcels, renting a car at airports, or picking prescription medications up at pharmacies.

The users can also prove age when required, for instance when buying tickets or attending events, all without having to reveal unnecessary information.
There are three options in the app to control how much information is shared.
The options include a photo with age confirmation, a simple ID showing basic personal information and the digital DNI.
The app will generate a QR code that can be used to verify the user’s identity once they have selected an option.
The code expires automatically after a certain time. This ensures that the information can’t be copied or reused later.
In the future it is possible to use the same QR code for voting by hand, but this depends on approval from electoral authorities.
The system prioritizes security and privacy by allowing users to choose what information they want to share.
The digital ID of a lost or stolen phone can be immediately cancelled by reporting the incident to the Policia Nacional.

To begin using MiDNI the citizen must first register his or her physical DNI. This can be done online via a card-reader, or personally at an official documentation updating point.
There are more than 300 townhalls with PAD services (Punto de Actualizacion de Documentacion), located in Policia Nacional Stations, Documentation Units and more.
Users must first register, download the app, input their ID details, set up a password, and then confirm their account with a code sent via SMS.
The Spanish government hopes that the new system will reduce waiting times and make the process of identity verification faster, easier and more efficient.
