Water contamination recall expands after new batches are found unsafe

AESAN has confirmed that some Fuente Madre natural minerals water batches have been contaminated. The alert was first issued on November 11 and has now been expanded on December 4 following reports of contamination.

AESAN: More batches of bottled waters found to contain contamination

Fuente Madre made in Montes de Toledo was found to contain contamination. Pseudomonas aeruginosaA very resistant bacterium, which is found in moist environments, including in soil and water. It can also be found on surfaces that have been in contact with water. If you are healthy, drinking water contaminated by the bacteria would cause only mild symptoms. But if you have other health complications or an immunocompromised person, it could cause more serious problems.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa Can also cause infections when it enters your body via other methods, such as an open cut.

Fuente Madre Natural Mineral Water Bottled, specifically:

• 1.5 litre bottles (batch 1 040725)
• 5 litre bottles (5290425)
• 8 litre jugs (L 8050525)

You can also identify the products by their expiration dates, which are 31-12-2027.

Where was the product sold

According to AESAN, this product was distributed primarily in Andalucia and Castilla la Mancha. However, it’s not impossible that the product could be redistributed to other autonomous communities. The product has been removed from the shelves of each autonomous community after the alert. However, customers may still possess it. AESAN advises consumers that they should double-check the brand, lot number, and/or the expiration date of any bottled waters in their possession and not consume them if it is from the affected batch.

What should I be doing if I discover a bottle that is from a batch that was contaminated?

Recent weeks have seen several product recalls.

AESAN recalled a popular product produced by Grefusa on Tuesday, Dec. 2, due to possible contamination with metallic particles. The metal particles were detected in the internal checks of the manufacturer.

Grefusa produces a variety of popular snack brands including Gublins. Pipas G. El Piponazo.

Additionally, late last month, consumers in Spain were warned after AESAN ordered the withdrawal of several cold‑cut meat products sold by the brands Nuestra Alacena (DIA) and Serrano, following detection of Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterial infection. Multiple batches of the bacteria that causes listeriosis.

Keep up with recalls and avoid contaminated products

It is important that consumers stay informed about health and sanitation alerts, either through AESAN or other reputable sources (supermarket newsletters tend to announce recalls of contaminated products and food in a timely manner). 

You should also:

• Check expiration dates before buying a product.
• Keep your receipts and digital history of purchases to see if you purchased the recalled product.
• To be safe, avoid “just in case” tasting suspicious products. Trust your sense of smell, and if you can’t, don’t ingest any recalled products.
• If in doubt, return the product or throw it away.
