WATCH: Calls in Spain to leave ‘criminal alliance’ NATO and cut military ties with the USA

A SPANISH MEMBER of the European Parliament has started a debate over Spain’s military allies by demanding that it withdraw from NATO, and break its ties to the United States.

Irene Montero, a member of the left-wing PODEMOS party and former Minister of Equality, slammed both the US and Israel as ‘the two greatest dangers of humanity and for world peace at this time’.

Her call comes after recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. American planes used Spanish bases such as the Naval Station Rota at Cadiz or the Moron Air Base at Sevilla.

She told reporters that “Israel has nukes, the United States have nukes, and the United States is the only country to ever launch a nuclear weapon.”

“This shows that the UN and NATO have never had anything to do with our security, they do not serve to defend us – on the contrary, they put us in danger, the UN and NATO put us in danger, and they serve not to defend us, but for Europe to wage the wars that the fascist Donald Trump orders.”

She then criticised the Spanish foreign ministry and the EU for ‘repeating American and Israeli war propaganda – that the problem is Iran’s nuclear weapons, when all international organisations, including the United States itself, have said Iran doesn’t have a nuclear bomb, whereas the two aggressor countries do.’

She continued: “That’s why we demand that Pedro Sanchez immediately prevent any Spanish military bases from being used illegally by the United States in order to continue attacking Iran.

“Nor should we send military force to Israel to stop its illegal attacks on the Palestinians and extermination plan. And, of course, we must place an embargo of all weapons that are used for genocide and get out of the criminal alliance NATO.”

The MEP asserts Spain as a peace-loving country should not remain allied to the United States or Israel.

This comes after Sanchez had negotiated an agreement with NATO that exempted Spain from the new NATO target for member states to spend 5% of their GDP on defense.

Spain spent just 1,4% on its military by 2024 but has already committed itself to meeting the previous requirement of 2% by the year’s end.
