Union says Costa del Sol Hospital cannot cope at night

The CSIF union is concerned about staff shortages on night shifts. According to the union the hospital is lacking sufficient porters and auxiliary staff to ensure effective and safe patient care.

CSIF reported that only one auxiliary nurse was often left to take care of over 30 patients on each floor during the night. Some porters are responsible for 180 patients. The union claims that this is an unacceptable situation and poses a serious risk to patients and staff.

The hospital and the Labour Inspectorate have received documents outlining their concerns and requesting urgent action. The union filed its first formal complaint in December of 2023, and claims that the situation has worsened ever since.

CSIF has requested the immediate hire of at least four porters and nine auxiliary nurses to relieve the pressure on night teams, and improve patient care. Also, they bring up the issue with unpaid overtime. Over 180 hours of overtime have been accumulated by many hospital workers since last year.

The union says that the hospital has refused to address the problem, which is pushing workers towards a legal action. CSIF has already passed some cases to its legal department.

According to the union the Costa del Sol Hospital’s conditions are unsustainable due to a lack of staffing and unpaid time. The union insists that the crisis will only worsen if there is no urgent hiring.
