A vintage Mercedes-Benz will be up for auction in May and is estimated to fetch a hefty price of more than £150,000 for its association with pop culture icon, Marilyn Monroe.
A 1950 Mercedes-Benz with Hollywood connections is for sale
Marilyn Monroe was said to have driven a 1950 170S, also known as the W136, through the streets and villages of Greece in 1956 during her vacation. A document dated February to August 1956 and signed by “Marilyn Monroe”, which corresponds with Monroe’s time in Europe, proves her part ownership.
It was a period of Monroe’s career that is well documented, and most notable was her marriage to Arthur Miller, a playwright in June 1956.
Historical significance
The 170 S, which evolved from the previous 170 Series, played a crucial role in Mercedes-Benz’s post-war recover. The 170 S model was a refinement improvement, with an upgraded suspension and a 1.7l engine that produced 52bhp. It set the standard for comfort, durability, and reliability in the early 50s.
The car is in good condition. The auction listings emphasize that the model is mechanically consistent with early 1950s engineering. This is part of what makes this car desirable for collectors of European post-war classics. The car has undergone extensive renovations to preserve its classic features and historical significance.
Find personal artifacts
It was actually during the extensive restoration of the car that its current owner learned about the starlet’s connection. A luggage set bearing the unmistakable MM logo was discovered inside the car. Also, a bespoke dash plaque and a luggage with the MM logo were found. The items will also go up for auction with the vehicle, which will enhance the auction’s status.
Collectors’ Appeal
Classic car collectors are not the only ones who have an interest in this car. It is the combination of automotive legacy and Hollywood legacy which makes this Mercedes so special. It is a rarity that both classic car collectors and Monroe enthusiasts see as more than just an restored vehicle.
The vehicle is available through Iconic Auctioneers and is set to go under the hammer on May 16, with estimate bids beginning at £120,000 to £160,000. Strong interest indicates that the final bid price could be higher than expected depending on competitive bidding.
