The work has started on the reconstruction of the bridge that runs along the A-397 between Ronda, Spain and San Pedro. This is a major route which has been closed for several months since severe damage was caused by a landslide earlier this year. The Junta de Andalucia confirms that the project’s final phase is focused on the reconstruction of the viaduct.
The first stage of the project, which included stabilising a hillside using a five-metre high dynamic barrier, and removing rocks that were unstable, is now complete. Crews work every day including weekends to speed up the project and reopen it as soon as possible.
The current phase involves removing the damaged bridge deck, and replacing it with new beams and paneling. They have already been made in a Ronda shop and are ready to go once the groundwork has been completed. This work includes strengthening the slope with high-resistance materials on the lower and mid sections.
Despite daily progress, Junta officials say they do not expect to see even one lane open before August. The Junta expects a full reopening to occur during the fourth quarter of this year.
The total budget for the project is €4.5 million. This road connects inland towns such as Ronda and the Costa del Sol. Local drivers and businesses affected by the closure are eager to see traffic returning soon.
