The best Christmas markets in Costa del Sol


The traditional Christmas market conjures images of frost and snow, but the Costa del Sol is a festive destination where the sun complements the seasonal spirit. In December and January, the major towns along the coast become a haven for foodies, gift hunters, and families who want to experience the Spanish holiday spirit.

Mistletoe & Malaga

Malaga is the capital of this region and boasts several famous spots. Muelle Uno’s market is a beautiful setting that runs until 5 January. Visitors can browse the stalls while enjoying stunning views of both the bay and sea. Equally popular is the market located at the department store El Corte Inglés on Avenida de Andalucia, popularly known as Cortelandia. The many stalls in the Parque de la Alameda in the centre of the city are the most popular and famous. A stroll beneath the magnificent illuminated arches on Calle Larios will give you a pure dose of Christmas spirit.

Mulled wine in Marbella

On the Avenida del Mar Esplanade, Marbella’s coastal hub is a wonderful festive village. Shoppers can choose from more than 30 stands to find gift ideas, fashions and crafts. This market is open daily from 12pm to 10pm, until 5th January. It also offers a programme of magic shows, dance performances and workshops for kids. San Pedro’s Market is opening on Saturday December 13th with a dancers’ show, Batucada and choirs along Calle Lagasca.

Enchanting Estepona

Estepona, a city on the west coast of Spain, focuses its attention on holiday attractions. Plaza Antonia Guerrero hosts concerts and performances of local choirs, as well as the lighting up of Christmas lights. Visitors can visit the Felipe VI Auditorium until January 4 to enjoy an ice skating rink, Santa’s house and other children’s activities. Santa’s Christmas Village, which features artificial snow, interactive activities, and will only be available on the Plaza del Ajedrez on December 21 for one single day.

Mijas in the manger

In Mijas the festive spirit has two faces. Mijas Pueblo’s Plaza de la Constitución hosts artisans and local merchants, open daily from 11am to 7pm until January 5. The Esplanade Bulevar de La Cala de Mijas hosts a market from January 6 to 7, featuring wooden kiosks and decorations, as well as handicrafts, sweets and hot drinks.

Benalmadena – Ring the bells

The market is a great place to start. BenalmadenaThis year’s, situated in Arroyo de la Miel and located directly in front the Casa de la Cultura attracts thousands of visitors, with its craft stalls, decorations and full family programme. The event runs from January 7 to 7. However, anyone planning a visit should be aware that the charming Fuengirola market, with twenty stalls and nativity scene, only runs until December 21.
