This week, King Felipe of Spain and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. They swapped palaces with pyramids.
Sherif Fatti, Egypt’s Tourism Director, accompanied the glamorous royals on their state visit to Luxor. They were treated as VIPs and given an exclusive look at the ancient wonders of Egypt including Temple of Hatshepsut.
The couple flicked the switch on a new night-time lighting system – installed by Spanish companies – which will allow tourists to explore the temples after dark.
The following day, the King and Queen popped into the Luxor Museum where Spanish archaeologists Myriam Seco and José Manuel Galán showed off dazzling finds – including coffins, jewellery and even 3,000-year-old flower bouquets.
The highlight of the trip was a deep-underground visit to the Valley of the Kings. The royal couple walked through the tombs Ramesses V & VI, only yards away from Tutankhamun’s resting place. They were then awed by the enormous and vibrantly decorated Tombs of Seti I.
They also checked out excavation projects being run by Spanish teams including the massive “Million Year Temple of Thutmose 3”, which is currently being restored for future generation.
The four-day visit – aimed at boosting ties between Madrid and Cairo – saw Spain’s King and Queen go from royal duty to Indiana Jones territory.
