Spain will soon experience a pleasant change as cooler air moves in from the Northwest. Many places will be more comfortable after a long stretch of intense heat, especially at night. However, the south and east still retain some of their summer warmth.
Heat warnings are still in effect for Friday, especially in the South and East
This Friday, temperatures will drop in the west and centre. Madrid looks set for around 33ºC, Zamora closer to 30ºC and Segovia about 32ºC. Further south and to the east, temperatures are higher. Malaga, Almeria, Murcia, parts of the Ebro Valley, inland Valencia and Albacete can still reach nearly 40°C.
Eleven areas remain on heat alert. Andalucia is under a red alert. Orange covers Aragon and the Balearic Islands. It also includes Castilla La Mancha, Catalonia. Murcia, Navarra, La Rioja and Castilla La Mancha. Castilla y Leon and the Basque Country remain under yellow warnings.

Some showers are possible in the northwest, mostly Galicia. Aragon and Asturias are covered by yellow storm alerts. The Valencian Community, Galicia and Asturias also have extra rain warnings. Winds will be moderate in the Strait of Gibraltar, along the Alboran Coast and later on the central-eastern regions. Galicia, Asturias and the Balearic Islands may experience morning mist, while dusty haze is expected to linger over the Canaries, southeast and Balearic Islands.
The weekend brings rain and clouds to the north
Saturday will bring a more pronounced change. In the north of the country cloudier skies with scattered rainstorms are expected, particularly along the Cantabrian Coast and in the Pyrenees. The majority of other areas remain bright. Balearic Islands experience some medium to high clouds while Canaries have cloudier northern slopes but clearer southern slopes.
Temperatures drop in most places. Only the Valencian Community coast, Almeria, Murcia and the Balearic Islands are likely to push past 35°C. Just two regions—the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community— keep yellow heat alerts.
Sunday mornings in the interior are cooler.
In many places, the temperatures drop dramatically at night. Places such as Avila, Burgos, Cuenca, Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia and Soria could see lows of 10°C or 12°C. Mediterranean coasts keep warmer nights, with minima still around 25 °C in Alicante, Almeria, Malaga and Murcia.
Daytime readings stay high in Malaga and Sevilla near 37°C. Murcia may still climb close to 40°C. Northern cities like A Coruna, San Sebastian, Oviedo, Santander and Vitoria stay much milder, with afternoon values between 22°C and 25°C.
What the weather means for your weekend plans
You’ll sleep better in inland areas because the nights are cooler. Pack an umbrella in the northern regions for Saturday’s possible showers. The southern and eastern coasts are still warm enough to enjoy a day at the beach, but residual heat warnings require that you take care when it comes to sun exposure and hydration. As the temperatures drop, there is also a chance of wind storms.
Aemet, the official Spanish meteorological centreAfter the weekend,, expects a return to warmer weather under mostly sunny skies. The next three days will provide a welcome respite from the intense heat in many parts of Spain.
