Spain is on high alert: two Atlantic fronts will merge and cause chaos in Andalucia

Spain is bracing for a potential ‘superstorm’ tomorrow as meteorologists warn of a rare weather phenomenon that will see two Atlantic fronts merge into one.

The so-called ‘Fujiwhara effect’ will take place on Wednesday, seeing the tail end of Storm Joseph combine with incoming Storm Chandra to create a massive low-pressure system.

While the new ‘superstorm’ has not yet been officially named, experts at Meteored have warned residents not to let their guard down.

The weather service warned on social media that “gales and significant amounts of snow” were expected at the Peninsula’s gates.

Aemet, the state weather agency has increased its yellow warnings to orange for Andalucia for Wednesday.

The most critical period is likely to be tomorrow between 7.00am – 4.00pm.

Inland Malaga, particularly the Serrania de Ronda, is facing a ‘significant danger’ risk with hurricane-force gusts expected to exceed 100km/h.

Orange alerts have also been issued for the entire Malaga coast, including Costa del Sol.

Forecasters expect winds between force 8 and 9 to whip up waves as high as five metres, posing serious risks to beaches.

Yellow alerts remain in effect for Axarquia and Guadalhorce regions where 50mm of rainfall could fall within 12 hours.

This upgrade is coming after Storm Joseph caused havoc in the Campo de Gibraltar (and the Rock) today.

Social media has been flooded with shocking footage of tables and chairs being blown from a 60 metre high balcony in the Eurocity complex at Gibraltar. They smashed onto the street below.

Because of rough seas, the Port of Algeciras has been forced to close its doors to heavy goods vehicles. Ferry crossings between Tangier and Ceuta have also been cancelled.

Authorities have urged residents to use extreme caution on Wednesday, secure outdoor items, avoid coastal areas, and make sure they do not drive in the worst of the storm.
