Costa del Sol – The Consumer Association has issued an urgent warning to residents across the Costa del Sol and beyond, following a wave of scam phone calls falsely offering financial compensation for recent power blackouts.
These calls, which seem to come from the official electricity companies, claim that customers are entitled for refunds or discounts because of service interruptions. Authorities have confirmed, however, that there is no compensation being offered and that electricity companies do not contact customers with offers.
Consumer Association spokesperson said: “These calls are a fraud, plainly and simply.” “If you receive a call offering compensation or asking for your bank details — hang up immediately.”
This scam is part a larger trend that has been sweeping across Europe and Spain, where criminals use sophisticated tactics to exploit the public’s trust. In recent months,
The deepfake scheme used AI-generated videos featuring celebrities such as Ben Fogle to lure people into fraudulent investment schemes. It defrauded thousands of people across Europe.
Scammers have impersonated Princess Leonor, claiming to be her, on TikTok. They promised financial prizes, and tricked victims into paying phony fees.
Five individuals were arrested by the Spanish police for impersonating Hollywood star Brad Pitt. They convinced their victims that they were in an affair and convinced them to send money.
Stay safe by following these tips:
Never give personal information or financial information out to uninvited callers.
Verify that the caller is who they claim to be by contacting them directly via their official numbers.
Report any suspicious activity to the local police or Guardia Civil.
Remember: If something sounds too good to true, then it is probably.
