Ronaldo made a public promise to be “a good boy” in anticipation of a hostile welcome in Dublin.

Ronaldo is sent off at Aviva Stadium

Ronaldo initially received a yellow for elbowing Dara o’Shea during a contest of possession in the 60th minute. After a video review of the pitch, Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg changed his decision from a yellow to a red.

Ronaldo received his first red card ever in 226 matches for Portugal.

Ireland manager Heimir Halgrimsson said ESPN that Ronaldo sarcastically “complimented” him on influencing the referee, adding, “It was his action on the pitch that cost him the red card… a moment of a little silliness from him.”

FIFA rules suggest Ronaldo could face a suspension increase

FIFA’s code of conduct:

  • The punishment for serious misconduct is at least two matches.
  • Violent behavior, such as elbowing, is punishable by a minimum ban of three matches.

Ronaldo’s ban could be extended to include the World Cup of 2026 in the United States. Canada, and Mexico.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez defended his captain, with Sky Sports Citing: “I don’t believe it’s an arm, I think it is a whole body but, from where the camera’s located, it appears to be an elbow. But we accept that.

“The only thing that left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth was yesterday at the press conference, when your coach talked about the influence of referees, and then, a centre-half fell to the ground so dramatically as Cristiano turned his body.”

Despite the defeat, Portugal remain two points ahead of Hungary in Group F. A win against Armenia would secure qualification — and send Ronaldo to a record sixth World Cup.
