The average cost of obtaining a driving license is between 700 and 1200 euros, which can be a considerable expense for a young person. The Andalusian Youth Institute (IAJ – Instituto Andaluz de la Juventud) has begun the process of providing financial aid to young people in Andalucía who want to obtain their driving licence. This financial aid will be used to pay for their driving test fees. These are currently priced at 94.05 Euros.
Although similar aid schemes already exist with Malaga city council, (for instance, the ‘Málaga Conduce’ (Malaga gets driving) scheme), this initiative is a first at regional level for the Junta de Andalucía. The regional youth ministry published this information when it announced the approval of the scheme.
Non-competitive assistance
Loles López’s department specified that the aid will be awarded on a non-competitive basis and will be for young residents of Andalucía who want to obtain a class B driving licence to drive a car. This aid “finances some of the costs of the driving licence, increases employability for young people due to increased training and qualification to gain access to the labour market and benefits young people’s mobility”.
This initiative also aims at “facilitating better cohesion, especially between municipalities with poor connectivity, and strengthening institutional co-responsibility when developing policies to promote autonomy, inclusion, and equal opportunity”.
A total of 119,680 new driving licences were issued in Andalucía in 2024
According to data published by Spain’s Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT) for 2024, compiled by the regional government in its publication for consultation prior to drafting the order for this aid, a total of 119,680 new driving licences were issued in Andalucía, of which 91.28% were for class B licences for private vehicles.
The 18-34 group is responsible for the majority of driving licences in Spain, with a total of 420,0097. This “confirms young people as the primary group that acquires a licence” and highlights the importance of targeting policies at the youth population in order to help them obtain a licence.
