Mercadona plans to close its supermarket in the centre of Alhaurín de la Torre after 25 years of service. The store on Calle San Juan has been an important part of the daily lives of many residents in Alhaurin de la Torre, particularly older people and those who do not have transport.
The town hall and the community are concerned about the decision. Joaquin Villanova expressed his “disappointment” at the decision and was concerned about its impact on vulnerable local residents who depended on the shop to buy essential items. He warned the closure of the shop could harm other local businesses.
Mercadona claims that the building does not meet the requirements of its new efficient store model and therefore, they intend to close it. A larger new Mercadona will open in July on Avenida de las Americas. Locals, however, say that the new site is far too far for people who don’t drive.
The town hall asked Mercadona either to reconsider the decision or, if it goes through with the closure, to ensure that another supermarket quickly replaces the shop. The town hall also requests that the store remain vacant for no more than one month.
Mercadona confirmed that its current store would close on July 27th, but it will not completely vacate until November 24th. All jobs will be protected, according to the company. Staff will also be relocated. The talks between the townhall and Mercadona are continuing.
