Marbella moragas – New beach barbecue boats and how to reserve them

Marbella’s beach barbecue stations (known as “barcas of moragas”) are being renovated through an art project. The aim is to unify and make them recognisable by their visual identity, which is tied to local maritime heritage.

This includes areas such as Marbella Town, San Pedro Alcantara and Nueva Andalucia. Curro Leyton is a local artist whose work and connection to Marbella enhance the cultural and social impact.

The barcas of Marbella had been painted only blue while those of San Pedro Alcantara were red and black. The new boats feature marine-inspired motifs with landscapes in vibrant colors and a contemporary cubist design. This offers a modern, accessible, and fresh aesthetic.

The distribution includes about ten in San Pedro Alcantara, 12 in Marbella (primarily at Playa del Cable), one at El Rodeito in Nueva Andalucia, and one at Las Chapas (Playa de La Víbora). Each barca is fully restored before any painting to ensure durability and protection from the harsh marine environment.

How to book a Barca de Moraga beach barbecue

Reservations for a barca, also known as a “puesto de moragá”, are free of charge and can be made through the official Ayuntamiento website. In designated areas, you can use the public facilities for evening barbecues. You will need to bring your own charcoal/wood and equipment.

  • Locations: Playa del Cable (Marbella, ~33 spots including some adapted for reduced mobility), Playa de La Víbora (Las Chapas), El Rodeíto (Nueva Andalucia), and La Salida (San Pedro Alcantara). Around 56 spots are available in total, including 4 that are adapted.
  • Season/Hours: Primarily summer (e.g., June–October), evenings from ~8pm to 1am, though some availability exists year-round in designated areas. Check the current availability.
  • Rules: You can book up to 60 days in advance. You must be a responsible party/adult. Clean-up required, no glass, fire safety, etc.

How to make a reservation:

Visit the official page. Select your preferred zone. Please fill out the form online with your name, ID/passport (if applicable), email, phone number, group size and requested time/date. Submit your request. If available, you’ll get an email confirmation and approval/permission. Please read the booking instructions and rules.

If online issues arise or for assistance, contact moragas@marbella.es or visit the Oficinas de Atención al Ciudadano (OAC) in Plaza de los Naranjos (Marbella) or San Pedro with ID.

As soon as it starts to warm up, spots will fill up fast. So book early. Follow all rules and bring trash and light if necessary for a fun and safe moraga.
