Madrid Park to ban climbing until August to protect birds during breeding season

The authorities are scrambling to protect the wildlife in the breeding season by banning rock-climbing until August..

According to the new restrictions imposed by the Community of Madrid officials, climbing is prohibited on certain routes within La Pedriza as well as access through the nearby points of entry until the 30th of July.

This measure aims to protect different species of rock-dwelling bird during their breeding periods.

The restrictions were imposed to protect species like the golden eagle and peregrine, as well as species such a griffon, kestrel, and common kestrel, during their breeding season.

Climbers love to climb cliffs or rock faces where they can find their nests.

Rock climbers have increased in number over the past few years. The increased number of visitors may affect the rock and trail conditions, affecting local wildlife.

Climbing outside of the restricted area is permitted.

Information for visitors is to be improved through signs at the access points, parking lots, climbing areas and visitor centres.

La Pedriza in Spain is a stunning natural landscape and a popular spot for climbers.

The granite massif is Europe’s largest and famous for its strange granite rock formations.
