Urgent health warning in Madrid after dozens infected in measles outbreak: Here’s how to stay safe against the disease

Madrid health alert: dozens of measles cases in Madrid. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself.

SPAIN’S capital has been rocked by an outbreak of measles with 24 cases confirmed in the first seven weeks of 2026 – more than the entire total recorded in Madrid during 2025.

The measles is spread easily by coughing, sneezing, and close contact.

The virus can remain airborne for up to 2 hours after the infected individual has left the room.

Early symptoms of the disease include a high fever, a cough, swollen eyes, and rashes.

A red rash appears on the face and spreads to the rest of the body a few days later.

Measles is a contagious disease that can have serious complications.

Six out of 24 recent cases in Madrid needed hospital treatment

The health officials emphasize that vaccination is still the best way to protect yourself, especially since 16 of the 24 people who were infected had not been vaccinated.

Basic precautions are also recommended by health experts to reduce the risk infection.

The MMR vaccination, which provides protection against measles mumps, and rubella in two doses is very effective.

Those who are unsure whether they have been vaccinated should consult their doctor or their local clinic.

It is important that parents ensure their children have received all the recommended vaccinations according to Spain’s immunization schedule.

It may be advisable to test the immunity of adults who have only received one dose or were vaccinated many years ago.

If you’re not vaccinated but believe that you have been exposed, you should take action immediately.

Receiving MMR vaccination within 72 hours can prevent disease or reduce its severity.

A six-day immunoglobulin infusion may also provide protection.

According to the most recent epidemiological report 11 out of 24 cases have been linked together.

Seven are part of three different outbreaks. Most of the infected people are adults.

Sixteen of these cases are involving people between the ages of 25 and 55. Four individuals over the age 49.

Three of the cases involved children. One is a 10-month old baby.

Nearly half the people infected are from abroad, but most of them have lived in Madrid many years.

Officials have said that the outbreak was not caused by travel.

Most of the patients who became ill had not been outside their region.

Authorities have warned that the rapid rise in measles cases starting 2026 will put the disease back on Madrid’s watch list for public health.

According to experts, preventing further outbreaks in the capital will require maintaining a high vaccination coverage as well as acting quickly when suspected cases are detected.
