The weather in Spain may change dramatically this weekend if the young meteorologist Jorge Rey’s latest forecast is accurate.
The 18 year old forecaster, who became famous after correctly predicting the Storm Filomena of 2021, warned that remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle, such as heavy rain, strong winds, and tropical storms could affect the country.
‘Important rainfall’ on the way, according to Jorge Rey
Jorge ReyGabrielle has been closely watched by, who is known for his uncanny accuracy and down-to-earth reports. Rey insists, however, that just because the storm has been downgraded from Category 3 to Category 2 doesn’t mean it is no longer a threat.
He explained this in his most recent update. “The winds could be very strong, especially on Saturday September 27 and Sunday September 28 in parts of Andalucía.”
Rey added that despite the tropical storm conditions sounding alarming, temperatures would remain pleasantly mild, and fall-like, due to warm air flowing southward. ‘We’re talking about really comfortable temperatures,’ he noted, though the unsettled weather could make outdoor plans tricky.
The areas most at risk
What are the areas where the rainiest downpours will be most likely to occur? Rey highlighted Galicia, Extremadura, Andalucía, the Ebro Valley and the Valencian Community as the areas most likely to see heavy rain and thunderstorms.
He warned that Murcia may also be hit by particularly severe storms depending on the interaction of Gabrielle with Iberian weather systems.
The storm’s impact will not be limited to the mainland. Rey says that the Canary Islands will also see rain showers between Sunday and the beginning of next week.
He acknowledged that there was some uncertainty. “Some models indicate strong storms while others suggest lighter showers.” It’s up to us to see what happens.
Forecast for October: Jorge Rey warns about storms in Spain
Rey continued his weekend streak in true Rey fashion. Rey also gave a preview of October, which is likely to be a month full of ups-and-downs for Spain.
He says the weather will be especially unstable at the beginning of October in the Southwest, as storms are expected to hit that area of the country. Temperatures will then drop across the North. Then, in a twist, he expects a short burst of warmth around October 8–9, with temperatures rising sharply nationwide.
The calm will not last. By October 10–11, Rey says rain, instability and storms will return, “especially in the west”.
As for the Día del Pilar holiday on October 12, his forecast suggests much of Spain could enjoy a break in the weather, although Galicia and the northwest may still have to deal with unsettled skies.
Spain weather: Jorge Rey warns about sharp contrasts
Rey is convinced that Spain will have a roller-coaster of an autumn. He explained that October will be a month of contrasts. “We’ll see days of sunshine and mild temperatures, followed by sudden storms and drops in the thermometer – particularly in western regions.”
Gabrielle may not be a hurricane, but his warning highlights the importance of keeping an eye on conditions that are changing and being prepared for sudden rain or wind gusts.
For Spaniards making weekend plans, Rey’s forecast is a reminder that the weather might have the final say – and that autumn in Spain could be wilder than many expect.
