The Local Police of Huércal-Overa have intensified their control and monitoring efforts significantly in an attempt to ensure compliance with the Municipal Ordinance on Animal Ownership and Protection.
An increase in fines
Due to these measures, fines in the town have increased dramatically and suddenly compared to last year. This initiative is part a larger campaign to encourage responsible pet ownership as well as improve cleanliness, safety and coexistence in public spaces.
According to reports, most of the sanctions issued this year relate to pet owners failing to remove pet waste from streets, an infraction that carries fines up to €300.
Dogs that do not have the required microchip identification are also a frequent offender, as well as dangerous breeds who don’t wear muzzles and walk without a leash. The municipality stressed that the rules and regulations were designed to protect the health and safety of residents and must be adhered to.

José Manuel Viseras, Councillor for Citizen Security, emphasised the importance of adhering to these regulations, noting that proper identification, waste collection and pet care are essential for public well-being. He encouraged residents to act responsibly, cooperate and help the town keep its streets clean.
The campaign emphasizes the importance of adhering to the Animal Welfare Law which requires that all dogs are microchipped. Failure to meet this requirement constitutes a serious offence, with fines ranging from €10,000 to €50,000. Authorities have reiterated that the aim of these measures is to promote responsible animal care.
What is your end goal?
Through these proactive steps, Huércal-Overa hopes to foster a culture of civic responsibility, protect public health, and maintain cleaner, safer communal spaces for all. By creating awareness, the town wants to create an atmosphere where people and animals can coexist.
