The Spanish consumer organisation OCU reported that a slimming cream sold online contains an active ingredient similar to those found in medicines, “whose non-prescribed use can be hazardous”.
It has informed the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition, Aesan, that the ingredient in question was ephedrine.
Ephedrine (a natural alkaloid) is a stimulant of the central nervous system and heart. It is used to increase blood pressure, make breathing easier and as a natural bronchodilator.
Its marketing is approved as a pharmaceutical product, and has undergone specific controls. However, the OCU warns against its dangers when it is used in slimming products that do not go through the same checks.
It is important to note that frequent and uncontrolled consumption of alcohol can lead to adverse effects, such as nausea, vomiting, headaches and insomnia. There are also dizziness and tremors.
OCU states that “Fasterdetox was marketed as a nutritional supplement, and therefore it shouldn’t contain an active ingredient like ephedrine”. This fact has been communicated to the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition, Aesan. “So that they can withdraw the product Fasterdetox which is illegal and harmful”.
