The recent reports from residents of a speedcamera on Avenida de las Gaviotas in Fuengirola are now part of an overall council program to improve the road safety across Fuengirola. Three fixed speed cameras are now operating at high-traffic areas, and eight mobile speed signs travel between sites informing drivers without any penalties. The new measures are in addition to the existing pedestrian crossings that have been raised, as well as extra police checks and improved road signage. All the changes are designed to reduce speeding. create safer conditions for people on foot and in vehicles.
New permanent speed camera sites
Three new speed cameras are now enforcing limits on Avenida Ramon y Cajal, at the intersection with Calle San Jose. They also enforce limits on Avenida de Las Gaviotas at the intersection with Calle General Rodrigo. Three existing cameras are now joined by the new ones, nearly doubling the number fixed enforcement points at Fuengirola. Avenida de Las Gaviotas attracted special attention after local residents posted photos of new equipment on the street in recent weeks. The council officers chose these roads based on traffic volume and speeding concerns previously raised by the locals. Once fully operational, each camera will issue automatic fines. This is similar to the method described in previous reports on the Gaviotas installations.
Addition of mobile speed warning signs
The town has eight new mobile speed signs that move between locations. These devices allow drivers to see their speed in real time without any penalties or fines. The units are placed at each location for several weeks before they move on to another spot in order to accommodate new traffic patterns and requests from local residents. Services use feedback from local residents and traffic intensities to decide where they will go next. Signs are meant to promote voluntary compliance with the speed limit through simple information, rather than punishing drivers. When drivers see their actual speed displayed, they often reduce their speed immediately.
