Estepona expands smart camera network to improve traffic flow

Estepona plans to upgrade its traffic management system, with the installation of more than 80 smart cameras in 80 locations throughout the town.

The council said the expansion would help to keep traffic flowing more smoothly and reduce congestion, as well as making it easier for Local Police to manage road during busy periods.

The cameras are a part of the system that was first introduced in 2023. The new phase, which will be more advanced and larger, will give the town an expanded network to monitor roads in real-time. The devices can identify vehicle types, read numberplates and send data directly to a central control center at the Local Police headquarters.

New tools to help manage speeding, other driving issues

A fixed radar station will also be used to monitor the speed. Although the exact location is not yet known, it will reduce risks in areas where drivers are prone to speeding. Local Police vehicles will be equipped with a mobile plate reader, which allows officers to inspect cars as they patrol the town.

All information collected will be linked with the internal system of the townhall for dealing with traffic offenses. It will also be connected to the DGT national traffic authority in order to make it easier when processing cases is needed.

Safety and privacy are the focus

According to the council, the upgraded network will comply with the National Security Framework in order to ensure data handling is safe. The system will adhere to all current laws for the protection and privacy of personal data. According to officials the cameras will only be used for traffic management and road security.

Investment in a developing town

The contract will cover the installation, maintenance and supply of the existing cameras as well as the new ones. The full project is expected to cost around €970,000.

Estepona is growing rapidly, and has attracted many new businesses and residents in recent years. The council claims that the increased traffic will allow the town to stay ahead.

What this means for residents, drivers and visitors

The town hopes that the upgrade will result in smoother travels, faster responses to accidents, and better control at peak times. Local Police will have a better understanding of the road network throughout Estepona.

Visitors and residents will notice less congestion in busy areas during holidays. Estepona is a city that wants to be more efficient, safer, and smarter.
