Dreams and Paths. The captivating paintings of Malaga artist Simón Pizarro in Fuengirola

Fuengirola is to present a captivating exhibition of realist paintings by local Malaga artist Simón Pizarro, titled “Sueños y Caminos” (Dreams and Paths). The public can view the show on Friday, 23 January, starting at 8pm at the Casa de la Cultura Manuel Delgado Perea will be on view for free until the 20th of February.

Pizarro’s seascapes stand out. His masterful use of blues and greens evokes the shimmering light from the Mediterranean. These works encourage quiet reflection and immersion into the scene. Pizarro, who was influenced by German Romantic painter Caspar D. Friedrich, often uses figures, usually viewed from the back, in his landscapes. These figures serve as symbols that guide the viewer to horizons full of meaning and emotion.

Art that meticulously records reality and builds on balanced compositions

His still-lifes are meticulous recordings of reality. They’re built on compositions that encourage slow, deliberate appreciation for mundane everyday objects. Pizarro, over the years, has had numerous exhibitions at galleries throughout Spain. He’s also designed posters for different institutional celebrations and contributed paintings that were used as set decor in television shows.

Born Jesús Simón Pizarro in Monroy, Cáceres, the artist now resides in Alhaurín de la Torre. In 1994, he was thrown into a passion for painting when he abruptly left his successful career as an automotive salesman. What began as a sudden “love at first sight”—sparked by encouragement from his wife and inspiration from Friedrich’s romantic works—led him to study under the renowned painter Robles Muñoz. He then dedicated himself to developing his own style and perfecting his technique.

Artists travel the world to find inspiration

Pizarro has had a broad and international artistic training. He studied in Madrid, Cheste, Seville and Malaga. At the University of Malaga he received a degree in Biology and a diploma in teaching. In addition to his studies in Limerick and Southampton in England, he also took courses at the University of Malaga in Malaga, Spain. He says that these experiences have helped him become more tolerant, creative, and open-minded.

Pizarro’s art is deeply rooted in his connection with the immediate environment. His paintings explore landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, flowers, and portraits of the people closest to him—those who have shared his journey. He finds beauty in familiar things, and enjoys the unique perspective that each observation offers. In many of his pieces, solitary characters appear in the landscape, inviting viewers to walk with them or sit, and share the surrounding splendour.
