In recent days, a developing weather system headed towards the Canary Islands sparked concerns. Many wondered if it would cause wider disruption in Spain. What is the severity of the situation? Could this be a precursor to more unpredictable weather elsewhere in Spain?
Spain weather agency, AEMET, who has responded to the increasing attention about the system by explaining that it does share some characteristics with DANA but is not expected at this stage to grow into a major issue.
What should you expect on the Canary Islands
Forecasts indicate that cloudiness will increase, showers may be scattered and localized storms could occur in the Canary Islands over the next few days. Unstable conditions are more likely in the west islands. Stronger winds and rougher waters may be possible along exposed coasts.
AEMET made it clear that the system is not showing the typical signs of the DANAs on the mainland. These events are often accompanied by intense rainfall over a short time period, which can lead to flooding. In this case the outlook is more moderate. Rain will be uneven and not widespread.
Can this system reach the mainland of Spain?
There is no indication at this time that the system’s movement will directly affect the Iberian Peninsula. Forecast models indicate that it will be confined mainly to the islands and not track towards the mainland. Even so, spring can be a very unpredictable time of the year. Conditions can change rapidly. When temperatures rise and cooler air mixes with it, some parts of Spain’s south and east, including Andalusia in particular, are more vulnerable to sudden weather changes. While this system may not be present, forecasters are still keeping an eye on the overall pattern.
More DANAs are on the way
No major DANA is forecast to occur over the mainland of Spain in the next few days. The current conditions may lead to more unrest as the season progresses. Spring is often accompanied by short, intense storms or rains. These can form quickly and move on almost as quickly. This type of system can appear without warning, even if it does not become more serious.
What does this mean to residents and expats alike?
Canary Islanders may find that their outdoor plans are disrupted, especially when showers or stronger wind develop. Occasionally, sea conditions could also be less favorable. This system has no immediate effect on mainland Spain. The weather is not expected to affect travel plans. This includes flights and road conditions. AEMET’s message is to listen to official updates, rather than reacting on speculation. Forecasts can change quickly.
