Marbella, Spain has long been known as a place of international culture, style and sun. Now, thanks to the vision of Andy Atkinson, the city’s vibrant youth community has an exciting new stage to call its own – The Playmakers Youth Theatre.
This dynamic venue, launched to great anticipation, is set to be the English-speaking home of aspiring actors and singers, both from the local and international Spanish communities.
The annual termly programme was just announced and students have already begun signing up to take places.
The brainchild of Atkinson – a former head teacher of international schools with a rich background in theatre and the arts – The Playmakers was founded on a simple but powerful belief: every child deserves the chance to experience the magic of theatre and the confidence it inspires.

Atkinson explains that “our goal is not just to create future star performers, but also character, resilience and an inclusive community.”
The Londoner, a former headmaster of Laude school in San Pedro Alcantara, saw a clear gap for a dedicated, high-quality youth theatre in English that catered to the diverse, multilingual families of the Costa del Sol – and was determined to fill it with excellence.
There are many dance and music schools but few that combine all the performance needs.
Andy’s commitment to excellence is evident in the team he has put together since January. The Playmakers isn’t a one-person show – it’s a powerhouse of passionate industry professionals and top-class drama teachers.
The team is made up of seasoned performers, vocal coaches, and choreographers. They bring a wealth expertise to the studio. The team ensures that all children, from shy beginners to seasoned young actors, receive training that is both nurturing as well as world-class.
The Playmakers Curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive performing art education.
Weekly classes, Monday to Wednesday, after school (5pm-8pm), focus on four key elements of performance, including acting, singing, and dancing. They also explore the world of stagecraft, which is often hidden.
Students learn to embody characters, project their voices with confidence, master movement and even discover the magic that happens backstage – from set design to lighting.
The holistic approach allows a child who is fascinated by stories to find their place.
From Thursday to Saturday, the core of this experience is the playmaking rehearsals.
Skills are brought to life. These sessions are dynamic and project-based, where students work together to create a full production. They are involved in every step, from script readings and blocking scenes to learning dance steps and harmonising melodies – fostering a profound sense of ownership and teamwork.
The theatrical experience doesn’t end with the school year.
The Playmakers will also be running holiday camps. A second camp is planned for October half term (October 27-31).
The intensive camps are a great way for children to learn new skills, meet new people and make unforgettable memories.
The Playmakers Youth Theatre is more than just an extra-curricular activity – it’s a launchpad for confidence, creativity and lifelong friendships.
Families who are looking to unlock the potential of their children in a professional, yet joyful environment can now do so.
