Drivers in Spain can have a difficult time receiving and paying fines from the Directorate-General for Traffic. In Spain, the combination of fearing losing points on your licence (points in Spain are deducted rather than added like they are here in the UK) with having to pay off the fines comes with an added problem. Quite often, the notification is received too late for you to be able pay the reduced penalty. It can be so late that an offender forgets why they were fined. But fortunately, deadlines are now starting to shrink.

Pere Navarro (head of the DGT) alluded, during a discussion held at the 4th World Conference for Road Safety in Morocco, to so-called “express fines”. Navarro cited Spain as an instance and the new methods put in place for speeding up the notification of penalties. He said that the time between the commission and notification of an offence has decreased from 52 to 7 or even 2 days.

Driving more responsibly

The new channels will allow drivers to receive their fines within 48 hours of receiving a penalty notice. This is possible thanks to the Dirección Electrónica Vial (DEV), a platform that has been in operation for some time and which allows access to DGT notifications digitally. Unlike postal delivery, this method ensures a more agile and direct service. DGT claims that integrating the system into DEV will help to make it easier to determine when an offence occurred. It is intended to enhance its educational nature and encourage more responsible driving.

Drivers must be registered with the website to receive these notifications. Dirección Electrónica Vial (DEV). To gain access, you must first identify yourself using your DNIe or electronic certificate, or by any other Cl@ve method.

Registration is easy. You can register in a few easy steps.

– In the section entitled “Access to service”, choose the option “Registration and modification in DEV”.

Choose an electronic certification to verify your identity (you may use the DNIe, electronic certificate, or PIN Clave).

Enter a mobile number or email address.

Select the notifications that you want to receive. In this case, choose the option’sanctions,’ to activate the express fines.
