A pyrotechnics’ workshop explosion in Alicante on Thursday 6th March killed Pedro Luis Sirvent as well as four others. One of those injured suffered burns on 80% his body. Three others were treated for anxiety and minor injuries. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of this explosion.
The incident took place around 11.20am. The area was mobilized by two ambulances, a SVB (basic Life Support ambulance), and two helicopters. Alicante Local Police was the first on the scene. The National Police followed, then the Tedax Bomb and explosives Unit disposal, as well as the homicide/judicial and homicide/judicial units. More than 100 people were involved in the operation, which is indicative of the magnitude of the incident.

The injured included Pedro Luis Sirvent’s son, a woman aged 43 who was treated at Hospital General de Alicante for anxiety and smoke inhalation and a man aged 68 who was admitted to the Burns Unit of the La Fe de Valencia Hospital after suffering burns on 80% his body.
Alicante Mayor Luis Barcala and security councillor Julio Calero, as well as government sub-delegate Juan Antonio Nieves, visited the scene shortly after the arrival by the emergency services.
Suspension High-Speed Train Service
Alicante – Madrid high-speed train was temporarily closed on request by the fire brigade. This is because the pyrotechnics workshops are very close to this railway line. The service was restored in the afternoon.
