Residents  along the Costa del Sol are increasingly wary as a man, known locally as the Pigeon Poo Thief or Bird Man of Algeciras. has continued a string of bizarre attacks on promenades along the sea. His bizarre crimes and repeated appearances on the streets have caused anxiety in walkers and social media, as well as frustration at what many believe to be limited police action.

The man has reportedly struck across several towns, including Casares, Sabinillas, La Duquesa, Mijas, Coín, and Benalmádena, and is believed to operate further along the Costa del Sol. Locals claim that relatives and acquaintances of theirs were also targeted. They report having had credit cards, wallets or cash stolen. Social media and community groups have become vital for keeping the public updated and sharing sightings.

On Thursday, December 4, Charlie and Alistair, were walking along the paseo at Playa Ancha, (Casares, Málaga) when they were approached by the man. The man was a familiar face from online postings, but they were unable avoid him. He sprayed Charlie’s face with what was believed to be an odious liquid that smelled like bird droppings.

Method and Modus Operandi

Alistair explains the thief’s technique: he pretends to be an innocent tourist and takes photos while watching potential victims. He sprays a liquid that smells like bird droppings from a spray bottle hidden in his clothing. He then offers water to help clean up the mess, creating a distraction for him to try and pickpocket or steal a bag.

“He is very fast. When we immediately reacted, turned around and faced him, the spray had disappeared, and he pretended to be innocent. He ran away and disappeared when we said the police. Alistair said, “We weren’t robbed but many others were.”

Locals feel frustrated and vulnerable because authorities seem to be taking limited action. The man has reportedly been arrested on several occasions, but repeated same-day releases allow him to continue operating along the coast, one residents adds ‘’Its a shame nothing more serious is being done to stop this”
