FREDDIE mercury, the Queen’s flamboyant frontman, who is considered one of the best singers ever, will receive a statue from the mayor of Barcelona.
Speaking on a Catalunya Radio Podcast to mark the 50th Anniversary of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, mayor Jaume Collboni said Barcelona owed the legendary British vocalist a ‘pending debt’ thanks to ‘music that inspired an entire generation’.
The monument will be installed at the newly renovated Placa de les Glories to pay tribute to Mercury, and Montserrat Caballe the Barcelona-born Soprano, with whom he produced. BarcelonaThe album from 1988 and the single with that name will send shivers down your spine.
The song was adopted as the official musical anthem for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, despite Mercury’s passing in 1991.

Caballe also sang the song before the start of the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final, between Manchester United FC and Bayern Munich at FC Barcelona Camp Nou.
Caballe is widely regarded as one of the most talented operatic sopranos in history. Organisers of the Olympics asked her to compose a song to accompany the Games to be held at her hometown.
She asked Mercury, her good friend, to join in on the project. They then produced Barcelona, a crossover opera and rock single that reached the UK Singles Chart at number two.
They also developed an eight-song album – the final album recorded by Mercury outside of Queen.
