The package of tax reductions that the Junta de Andalucía regional government will include in its budget for 2026 will include tax deductions for sports-related expenses. The measure includes gym membership fees as well those paid by tax payers to sports clubs, centres, federations and other entities.

This measure follows that announced on Monday by Junta President Juanma Moreno. It concerns tax relief for veterinary expenses in the first year after animal ownership, in the event of purchased pets, in the first three years of adoption of pets and during the entire life of the dog in the instance of service dogs.

It is the seventh tax cut package since Juanma Moreno was appointed president of the Junta. The tax burden will be reduced by 55 million euros. The complete content will be revealed in the next few days.

Regional minister of finance Carolina España justified the measure with the need to promote sports among Andalusians as part of a healthy lifestyle.

100 euros per taxpayer

In the return of personal income tax, gym fees or other sports center fees can be deducted up to 100 euros annually per taxpayer. The new measure will be beneficial to 785,000 Andalusians, according to estimates.

“There is no doubt that physical exercise and sports are fundamental tools for maintaining and improving physical and mental health,” España said, highlighting the societal and public impact of physical activities, which help prevent and reduce the risk of heart diseases, cancer, type II diabetes and mental illnesses.

The measure is a 15% deduction on expenses related to sports, up to a maximum of 100 euros for each taxpayer.

Next Tax Return

The deduction is retroactively effective from 1 January 2020, meaning that you can apply it to your next income tax return. All taxpayers residing in Andalucía, regardless of their income bracket, will be able to benefit from.

España said that the tax reduction measures adopted by the Andalusian government since 2019 represent a relief of around one billion euros each year for Andalusian households. Her statement said that since the arrival in the Junta of the PP, a general policy of tax cuts has been implemented. This has resulted in a reduction of all taxes, which fall under the regulatory authority of the regional government: personal income, legal documents and property transfers, inheritance, donations, and wealth. The tax brackets have also been deflated when inflation was high.

“Andalucía used to be a fiscal hell and now it is the second region with the lowest taxes,” the regional minister said. She claimed that lower taxes are a catalyst for the economy. The Junta also implements measures to simplify bureaucracy as well as measures that facilitate companies in their quest for markets abroad.

According to España, as a result of these policies, Andalucía has more taxpayers and therefore tax revenues are increasing despite the tax reductions.
