Andalucía flood evacuees begin gradual return home after week of relocation
Some of the residents of the Cadiz town of Grazalema, who had to leave their houses more than a week ago to avoid the floods in Andalucía, can now return home. Some residents will need to wait until technicians have declared their area safe.
The announcement was made by Juanma Moreno, the president of the regional government.
Moreno explained that certain areas in the town will receive a safety stamp after undergoing a technical evaluation, which is supported by reports provided by geologists currently measuring the risks of ground movement.
Some evacuees may have to live in Ronda until the teams determine that the streets are safe. The return is gradual.
Moreno, who was visiting the tables in the sports center to speak to people whose lives had been disrupted by recent storms, said: “This gives me a glimmer hope.”
Budgets may be amended
During his visit, Moreno also confirmed the implementation of the Andalucía Actúa plan, which will “allocate” economic means to repair the areas that most need it.
The Junta has allocated more than 500 millions euros from its own funds to the first phase of the rehabilitation of the road system. The first priority will be to focus on the roads that are considered vital for residents’ access and the operation of the schools.
Moreno announced that classrooms will be opened in Ronda, Zahara and other locations for children who are unable to return home in time to continue their education.
