Almería has recorded a significant population boost with over 51,000 people moving to the province in 2024, despite a sharp downturn in Níjar.

New data from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalucía (IECA) shows Almería maintains a positive migratory balance of 8,680 people. This province is now third in growth for the entire region, behind Malaga and Seville.

However, in the town of Níjar, according to the IECA data, in 2024 there were 782 more departures (3,821) than arrivals (3,039). This is ten-times the number of Arboleas in second place, which has a difference of only 76 points.

Almeria has 32 municipalities that have a negative balance of migration in 2024. In most cases, however, the difference in emigrants versus immigrants is below 20.

Zero, that is. Zero was observed in only two places. Alboloduy had 35 departures and 19 arrivals.

Almeria City saw the largest migratory imbalance in 2024. The IECA data shows that 10,267 people relocated to the city compared with 7,414 leaving, which is a difference 2,853.

Roquetas de Mar ranked second with an overall balance of 1,226 (eight,701 newcomers and seven,475 emigrants). Vera (708), and El Ejido (525) were the next two towns, although with lower numbers.

 Origins and destinations

In Almería, the majority of migration is from and to other countries. In 2024, almost 52,000 immigrants were registered. Of these, 34,917 were from abroad. It is the same with emigrations. 34,917 out of 43,300 cases are destined for foreign countries.

The statistics on migration do not just include international movements, but also the changes of residence in the country, the province, and the municipality. In 2024, Almeria province recorded more than 10,000 moves in this area. In over 12,000 instances, a move to another location within the province was recorded.

On the other hand, the IECA indicates that there were 3,209 occasions in which people moved from other Andalusian provinces to Almeria compared to 2,270 departures to other parts of Andalucía. There are more than 6,400 movements in Spain. Of these, 3,619 are migrations, and 2,817 emigrations.
