After a landmark face transplant in Barcelona, the successful separation in Barcelona of Siamese identical twins has been described as an impressive medical operation.
Sant Jona de Deu in Barcelona separated the twins after they were joined together at the abdomen.
Twenty members of the medical staff were involved in this five-hour surgery that took place on 8 November 2023.

They prepared for the surgery by creating 3D lifesize physical models using images from the twins. The complicated operation was made successful by creating lifesize 3D models using images of the twins.
And successful it was; the now two-year-old twins, named Khadija and Cherive, live a normal life and are ‘perfectly healthy’ – recently they reunited with the team that performed their life-altering treatment.
Only a scar on the abdomen is left to remind them of their medical history.
The sisters, who were born in Mauritius but brought to Spain for medical treatment under the Cuida’m Programme which began in 2004, has allowed Catalunya to treat 400 children.
The program provides services to children who cannot receive the necessary treatment in their countries of origin.

The hospital Romero visited was the Nuakchot Hospital, which is 500 km away from Khadija’s and Cherive’s rural village.
They would not have had the opportunity to receive this transformative therapy.
Many Siamese Twins are not viable candidates for surgery. Some never survive or die in their first few weeks due to unsafe places of connection.
Siamese twins make up one out of every 250 pairs of twins.
Another impressive medical operation that took place in Barcelona was the successful surgery performed on a pair of Mauritian twins.

The Vall d’Hebon University Hospital in the same city performed the first ever face transplant using a deceased donor.
Around 100 medical professionals participated in this surgery, which lasted nearly 24 hours.
