The weather is changing in Spain this week. “From Thursday we are likely affected by a retrograde low over the eastern part Spanish mainland. Some models place a high value on it, while others don’t. It is now the norm that the region where it will rain most heavily would be in eastern Andalucia. Some weather models also give rainfall in eastern Andalucía,” highlighted local Malaga weather expert José Luis Escudero in his SUR blog ‘Tormentas y rayos’. Spain’s state weather agency (Aemet) agrees with this forecast: “In the second half of this week, a ‘Dana’ will probably bring precipitation to areas of the eastern half of Andalucía,” Aemet warned on its X social media account.
Aemet says that for now, this weather change could be intensified on Thursday. On that day, the state agency forecasts for Andalucía “cloudy skies will prevail with showers accompanied by storms, more likely and intense in the eastern half and in the afternoon”. The temperatures are expected to drop, and moderate to light easterly winds will blow along the Mediterranean Coast. This instability is expected to last until at least Sunday.
A major change in weather is expected from Wednesday due to the atmospheric blockade that has been engulfing the British Isles. This high pressure will encourage easterly winds to enter Spain, which are laden in moisture. This could lead to heavy rains in Mediterranean regions, as the sea temperatures are still around 25C. A trough cold air with retrograde evolution may also remain over the Peninsula, the Balearic Islands and isolate, leading to a potential ‘Dana storm’, explained the Meteored portal.
What areas are most likely to be affected? Samuel Biener is a researcher, climatology dissemination expert and editor at Meteored. He revealed that the European weather models predicts the Valencian Community to have the highest rainfall accumulation. “It could exceed 100-200mm”, Samuel Biener said. Andalucía would also be on the map, according to this expert. The greatest instabilities are expected between Thursday morning and Sunday morning. However, the duration will depend on how the retrograde trough evolves, which is uncertain. The heaviest rainfall could occur in the Balearic Islands (especially in the Pitiusas and the south of Mallorca), Valencia, Catalonia, Murcia, eastern and southern Andalucía, Teruel and eastern Castile-La Mancha. Storms may also occur in the interior of central and eastern Spain, including the mountains.
In Malaga province, Aemet forecasts a 100% probability of rain on Friday in the capital of the Costa del Sol as well as in Vélez-Málaga, Ronda, Antequera and Marbella.
