Man arrested in Andalucia over bogus car park bomb threat that threatened to shut down Semana Santa celebrations

A man arrested in Andalucia for a bogus bomb threat at a car park that threatened to shut Semana Santa down

Within 24 hours, the Policia Nacional officers were able to complete their work. The police have arrested a suspect suspected of issuing a false threat of a bomb in the heart of Jerez.

On Holy Thursday he was located in Sanlucar de Barrameda, ending an incident which had put the city of Sanlucar de Barrameda at a standstill during one of the busiest weeks of a year.

The arrest is related to a number of calls that were made the night before, alleging an explosive device was placed in a vehicle parked at the central Plaza del Arenal.

A large and immediate police response was launched to protect residents as well as the many Semana Santa visitors.

The operation, according to police, involved officers from Jerez’s station, alongside specialist units including the TEDAX unit for bomb disposal and sniffer canines brought in by Cadiz.

The area around Plaza del Arenal has been quickly secured and the access to the parking lot was closed.

While they carried out an inspection of all four underground levels, officers had to restrict both entrance and exit.

At that time, there were more than 1000 vehicles in the parking lot, including cars and vans.

Investigators started working immediately after the incident to track down the source of the false calls.

They were rewarded quickly. By the early afternoon of the next day, they had identified and arrested a suspect in Sanlucar.

He is currently in Jerez being held while officers investigate his motives.

Police have described him as the ‘alleged perpetrator of a public disorder offence’, although they have not ruled out further charges.

The alleged economic damages caused by his operation could also lead to additional punishment.

The police have taken this opportunity to thank the public and their calmness and cooperation during the incident.

Special mention was given to residents, tourists and hospitality workers, as well as members of local religious brotherhoods – many of whom had to adjust their planned Holy Week processions at short notice.

This type of incident is taken very seriously by the law.

Falsely reporting an emergency situation that results in the mobilization of emergency services could result in a prison sentence of up to a year or hefty fines.

The responsible parties may be required to pay for the damages and costs caused by their actions, including any damage or costs incurred by the public service.

A coordinated police response allowed for a quick resolution to what could have been an even more serious situation.
