Residents and tourists in eastern Spain have been warned to be on the lookout for heavy rain, hailstorms, and strong winds. Valencia region and the Balearic Islands.

The yellow and orange weather alerts were in place for Tuesday, 15 September. Coastal areas of Comunidad Valenciana are among those who could be at risk.

Alerts in Valencia are orange and yellow

AEMET, Spain’s state weather agency. has issued warnings in the event of a combination heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with hail and strong wind. Valencia is under orange alerts, while other parts of the region are still on yellow alerts.

Heavy rains can quickly cause flooding around roads and drainage channels. Hail, sudden gusts and other weather conditions can be dangerous for drivers, cyclists or anyone who is caught outside.

Conditions can quickly change during thunderstorms. A quiet morning is not always a sign of what’s to come later.

Mallorca faces another weather hazard

Mallorca is on high alert as well, due to the risk of flooding that thunderstorms and heavy downpours pose in some areas. This warning is especially important for those who plan to travel on the island. Roads can quickly become dangerous when heavy rain falls in a short time.

Mallorca has been hit by a severe weather spell this month. On September 9, emergency services in Mallorca dealt with 185 cases after strong winds and heavy rains. The island also experienced flooding.

Thursday, 17th September, is now receiving special attention. Predictions point to a potential severe combination of thunderstorms and flooding on Mallorca.

Take care of the road!

If you are travelling in heavy rain, avoid driving on flooded roads. Never drive through water that is not clear.

Even if a road seems passable, cars can quickly lose their grip in standing water. Fast-moving floodwater is also dangerous. The people living in the affected area should also remove loose items from terraces and balconies, check gutters and drains, and be aware of local warnings.

AEMET says its Meteoalerta system This app gives you the latest information on dangerous weather in Spain, up to 72-hours ahead. Conditions and warning levels may change with each update.

Before leaving, anyone in Valencia, Alicante and Castellon, or Mallorca, should check for the latest alerts, especially if storms are expected to be heavy.
