The holiday traffic on the Costa del Sol typically eases up once August is over. This hasn’t stopped two fatal head on crashes in 48-hours on the inland highways that link the coast and the Guadalhorce. A toddler is among those injured.

Local sources say a car going downhill attempted to overtake a vehicle that was coming up the mountain. The same sources claim that the driver who died was the person who attempted to overtake. Guardia Civil officers responsible for traffic have not yet commented.

Firefighters freed three more occupants from the wreckage. A woman, 26, a man 65 years old and a child of two were transported to Hospital Costa del Sol. The Guardia Civil sent crews to the scene, along with local firefighters and 061 ambulance services.

A collision between a car and a truck on the A-705

Two occupants in a car had died the day before after being hit by a head-on crash with a lorry on the A-7052 in Alhaurin de la Torre. On Wednesday 9 September around 15:30, calls reached 112. Traffic control later put the smash at kilometre 4.7, in the Peñon Zapata area, near the airport.

Witnesses claim that the car had crossed the oncoming lane. Firefighters from Malaga’s provincial consortium, as well as units from Alhaurin de la Torre & Torremolinos, managed to free the car driver and passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The lorry driver, however, was not hurt.

Identities of the two dead have not been officially released in the first agency copy, though later Spanish reports named them as residents of Cañete la Real, one younger and one older.

The valley roads that keep appearing in crash reports

Both roads are conventional two-way routes used by commuters, delivery lorries and visitors travelling inland from Fuengirola, Mijas Costa and Malaga airport. These are two-way roads used by commuters and delivery vehicles, as well as visitors who travel inland from Fuengirola airport, Mijas Costa, and Malaga. The space available to recover from a sudden overtaking or car leaving the lane in front a heavy vehicle is very limited.

DGT data still shows most fatal crashes In Spain, accidents happen more on rural roads than on dual carriageways. Malaga was also ranked last in a recent ranking of city driving for crashes and points lost. This is not surprising to anyone who has driven on the A-7, or the valley connectors during late summer.

Three deaths in just two days won’t change the statistics for an entire year. The statistics show that September can be a very dangerous month on these short links in the inland.
