Many expats in Spain feel that bringing their familiar UK- or foreign-registered cars over is the best option when moving. How long can you drive on these plates before breaking Spanish law?
In the meantime, the vehicle should remain legal in the country of origin. This includes valid road taxes, a current, valid MOT (if applicable), and adequate insurance. The DVLA portal allows Spanish authorities to easily verify the status of a UK vehicle. Cutting corners could cause complications in the future.
Re-registration is often perceived as being prohibitively expensive by residents. However, costs are largely determined by two factors: the vehicle’s value and CO2 emissions. The more a vehicle is worth and emits, the higher its registration tax. Older models with lower emissions are often subject to lower fees. Newer cars or those with larger engines can be subject to higher import duties.
For those who are unfamiliar with Spanish bureaucracy and/or do not speak the language well, this process can be complicated. It usually involves passing an ITV test, settling formalities with customs, paying taxes and assembling the right registration documents.
If you still have foreign plates on your car, you could save yourself a lot of trouble and money if you act now.
