Power blackouts force Las Cañadas residents onto streets after another sleepless night

Neighbours from Las Cañadas, the area between Mijas and Fuengirola, poured into the streets on Saturday morning, July 25, despite intense heat. After another hot night without electricity, families were tired and angry. Protests were fueled by electricity or its absence.

Recent outage causes homes to be dark at midnight

The power went out at exactly midnight. The homes were left without heat or light. Fans and air conditioning were not available. Food began to spoilage in refrigerators. Additional hardships faced the elderly, and those needing care. The normal daily routine ceased to exist, or was rather very hot. Residents described what they saw in a letter to the public: “From midnight on Sunday, we were without electricity in our homes. We have experienced spoiled food and spoiled water. Our elderly and dependent relatives are also affected.”

Grid failures are a chronic problem that dates back many years

This blackout is only the latest in a long series of power outages. Locals have reported years of power cuts, voltage drops and constant failures. They blame an electrical network that is clearly insufficient and obsolete for today’s demands. The letter says: “We’ve been experiencing power outages, power drops, and constant breakdowns due to a clearly inadequate and outdated electrical network that is not meeting the needs of our neighborhood.” They say they’ve complained about this for too long, without getting any results. Local authorities themselves recently admitted historical supply problems exist in Las Cañadas and that modernisation investment is required. But it’s not the responsibility of the electricity company It is the court, not the council in this case.

Closed shops, lost goods, idle workers

The economic damage was severe on Saturday. Small businesses lost a whole day of business because they remained closed. The risk of total loss was high for perishable stocks. Both customers and staff suffered. Residents wrote: “Today, many shops and small businesses were unable to open their door, causing a loss of a day’s work, putting perishable goods at risk and also affecting employees and customers.” Residents call this situation unacceptable for the 21st century.

Real investment is needed, not cowboy fixers

No special treatment will be sought. Only the basic service that every citizen is entitled to. All bills are paid in full. They insist on a stable, high-quality power. The distribution company and the competent authorities are urged to act urgently. “We urge the distribution company and competent administrations act urgently and definitively. The neighbours of Las Cañadas are tired of promises and temporary solutions. We need to have facts, real investment and a firm committment so that the situation doesn’t happen again.” A problem that is years old, and not just a single failure, continues to affect hundreds of families.
