Tourists fear Benidorm is all drunken Brits. Residents say that’s only a tiny part of the story

Tourists are afraid that Benidorm’s residents are all British drunks. Residents insist that this is just a small part.

One British holidaymaker confessed that he was “dreading” his two-week stay in Benidorm, after reading about its reputation for partying online. Regular visitors and residents agree that many people judge the entire Costa Blanca resort based on one noisy, small corner.

Benidorm, the fear of many

Benidorm has a reputation for being a place of British pubs and drunken tourists. There are also reports that travellers have woken up in the middle of the night to loud noises and late-night screaming.

In a recent article, the anxiety of many people was clearly expressed. Reddit discussionOne British tourist admitted that they “dreaded” a family vacation to Spain’s famous resort due to its reputation for fighting, nightlife and cheap bars, as well as the rowdy British crowds.

Many comments did not deny that the resort’s reputation as a party destination was incorrect.

Some visitors said that Benidorm is a loud and tacky place, heavily influenced by British nightlife. The strongest message, however, was that social media does not represent the entire destination.

A commenter, who once held the same negative opinion, wrote that they only went because their Spanish flatmates had insisted the place was “nothing as it appeared on television”. They were pleasantly surprised after visiting.

Another person commented that the Old Town, the people and their hotel were all lovely.

Benidorm is the only part of Benidorm that travellers are told to avoid

It was most often recommended to stay away if this is not what you want from your holiday.

Several people have pointed specifically to the so-called British Zone around Rincón de Loix, Calle Gerona, Avenida de Mallorca and Calle Lepanto as the area most associated with the loud nightlife image.

One commenter summarized it simply, saying that those who want Benidorm “to be the worst possible experience” should remain in the “animal zones”. The same user said that visitors can still enjoy a good holiday by making an effort. They could walk, cycle, take the tram, or choose quieter beaches.

The thread was a bit more helpful than a simple bashing of resorts. The stereotype was not denied by regular visitors. They said it was not the whole picture.

Locals claim that the Old Town is a completely different destination

Old Town was repeatedly cited as the best way to save your reputation.

Some highly recommended locations were El Castell, the Balcón del Mediterráneo, Poniente beach and the older streets away from the busiest nightlife areas. If you only watch videos of people drinking late at night, and do not venture off the beaten track a bit, these are the parts that many first-time tourists miss.

Poniente was another suggestion. Official tourism information It is described as Benidorm’s largest beach. The three-kilometre stretch has a calmer atmosphere than Levante, and it is popular with domestic tourists.

The resort is not just for “animal lovers”. It also attracts Spanish families, retirees, walkers, bicyclists, beach-readers, tapas bars, and people who don’t want to drink from novelty buckets.

Benidorm has a larger population than British stereotypes

Benidorm may have a reputation dominated by British tourists, but it is so much more than this.

According to Benidorm City CouncilIn 2025, the city will have welcomed 3 million visitors and had recorded over 16 million overnight stays. In the same tourism report, visitor satisfaction was 78.8 percent and safety 95 out 100.

Hotel demand will also remain high into summer 2026. HOSBEC is the hotel association in Comunitat Valenciana. It said that Benidorm achieved 83.1% hotel occupancy. first half of May 2026Hotel guests in that time period were 50 percent British.

The UK is a significant market. It also shows that reducing Benidorm only to “drunken Brits overseas” is not the whole picture. There are permanent residents in the resort, as well as Spanish tourists, European visitors and families. Also, there are pensioners, repeat travellers, families and many other types of people who visit.

Is it possible to enjoy Benidorm and not visit the party strip?

Many experienced Benidorm travelers say yes!

Reddit users have suggested that Benidorm should be treated more as a base than as a cage. The Alicante-Dénia TRAM line makes it possible to visit nearby towns, while commenters repeatedly recommended Altea, Albir, Calpe, Alicante, Dénia, Guadalest, Elche and Tabarca for day trips.

Travellers who don’t like clubbing were unanimous in their opinion: avoid the strip after dark, spend more time in the Old Town and choose Poniente instead of the most crowded parts of Levante. Also, use the coast surrounding Benidorm rather than judging your holiday by a single street.

Benidorm may not be for everyone. To pretend otherwise would constitute dishonesty. The version that people are afraid of is real. The version people fear is real.
