It’s become fashionable to revive old motoring names, sometimes in a totally different form than their original. However, this can be a difficult task for automakers. Many people from a certain era may recall those names and see them with rose-tinted lenses.
Honda’s relaunched Prelude as a coupe, not as an SUV powered by electric motors, like some other automakers have done.
The Prelude looks good in this new form, according to those who commented about my test model. A 2.0-litre engine powered by dual electric motors is mated to a e-CVT auto gearbox.
Prelude offers a refined, smooth ride. The Prelude is less noisy than normal, even when the engine revs increase as they do with CVT transmissions. The ride is comfortable and compliant to absorb the potholes and bumps on our roads. There are four driving modes – Custom, GT, Sport and Comfort – and S+Shift which simulates gearchanges from the CVT transmission.
The build quality of the Prelude interior is excellent, as is usual with Honda. Although it is not a luxurious car, the Prelude feels premium and tactile. Seat comfort and space are excellent for those in the front seats. Also, there is a wide range of adjustment. Even at the back, it isn’t as tight as you may think. Taller passengers may have some issues with headroom.
The standard equipment is very good. There’s only one model with smart entry/start, rearview camera, front/rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, auto lights, high beam assist, automatic wipers, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a decent sound system featuring Bose speakers.
Prelude’s performance isn’t particularly impressive, but it is certainly fast enough. It reaches 62mph in just under 8 seconds. Like many interesting cars, speed does not always equate with enjoyment. The Prelude is an excellent example of how this can be true. It’s a car capable of making you smile but also has a great usability for everyday trips.
There’s a car for everyone. Good looks, great build quality, functionality and fun behind the wheels. Rarely do you find a vehicle that can tick all of these boxes. It is a testament to Honda’s ability to produce a car which stands out amongst the homogenous models that we see today.
