This May bank holiday, where to expect rain and storms

Prepare yourself for rainy weather if you’re heading to Spain this weekend. Storms and heavy showers of rain are expected to hit the eastern and southern provinces. This could disrupt travel plans and outdoor festivities at the start of the long holiday.

National Meteorological Agency AEMET There have been alerts issued regarding an atmospheric trough with low pressure that could lead to instability. While western areas may have clearer skies, those along the Mediterranean Coast will likely experience a more volatile time with thunderstorms and lightning. The storm could bring heavy hail and high gusts of winds to more mountainous zones.

What is in store for Valencia and Alicante

Valencia and Alicante Provinces are in the direct path of the worst weather conditions. Local forecasts predict a drop in temperature as the storm front passes through the region. The recent warmth will be replaced by a chillier feeling, so do not put your duvet away just yet. The skies will clear on Saturday afternoon, with patchy cloud, and the weekend should be more pleasant. The worst weather is expected to be in Valencia, but it will be much better further south.

Unfortunately, Murcia is also expected to experience the same instabilities, with cloudy skies dominating for most of the weekend. Temperatures are expected here to be comfortable despite the likelihood of wet weather. However, sudden storms can force beachgoers indoors at short notice.

Malaga and Almeria: a changing sky

Malaga, Almeria and other provinces of the south will experience gusty winds along with scattered showers. Visitors to the Costa del Sol and Almerian coasts will find it difficult to enjoy coastal walks or boat rides due the strong easterly wind. There will be more sunshine in these provinces compared to their neighbours from the north and east, but it’s still a changeable weather.

Granada, and the surrounding mountain ranges, remain susceptible to afternoon showers. Sierra Nevada’s peaks may be affected by sudden cloud formation, which could bring heavy rain to higher altitudes while bringing cooler temperatures to city streets. The weather in the mountains can change quickly.

Rain hits Mallorca

Mallorca will experience a significantly cooler holiday weekend this year compared to the last few weeks. As the weather system passes across the Balearic Sea, the weekend will feature overcast skies and showers. Expect a mixture of rain and grey skies, with brief periods of sunshine in between.

The long weekend is set to be a relaxing one, even if it does rain occasionally. Remember that many shops and services are closed on Friday, 1 May. They will reopen as usual on Saturday.
