Check the map first if you’re planning to travel during Spain’s bank holiday weekend of May 2026. Forecasts indicate that rain will continue to fall in Galicia, and other parts of northern Spain, from 1 to 3 may. However the southern coast and Mediterranean region are expected to enjoy calmer weather. Labour Day this year falls on Friday, which means millions will enjoy a long weekend. This is likely to be one of spring’s busiest travel breaks.

What does it mean? Weather The cost of travel, the choice of city or beach breaks, and where people choose to go could all influence their decisions.

The forecast is based on Jorge Rey, has provided an early outlook on the start of may. Official forecasts will be more accurate closer to May. However, the first signs already indicate a familiar Spanish division between sunnier eastern regions and wetter Atlantic areas.

Rain in Galicia, northern Spain

The current forecast is not good for travellers headed to the North West.

Galicia, and parts of Cantabrian coastline could be subject to persistent rains during the holiday weekends. This includes areas where people visit for the green landscapes, seafood and coastal drives.

Cities such as Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, A Coruña, Santander and Bilbao may therefore face damp conditions just as hotels and roads become busier.

It is not uncommon for rain to fall in this area during the spring, but timing is important. A wet Monday is one thing. Another thing is a wet weekend.

Families who are planning a quick break want to spend time outdoors, go on scenic excursions and dine at restaurants. When rain falls for several consecutive days, plans can be quickly changed.

It does not mean you should avoid the north. The north is not to be avoided.

Central Spain can experience mixed spring temperatures

The middle of the nation may be somewhere between. In some areas of the country, cloudier skies can be expected. There is a possibility for scattered showers instead of continuous rain. This can often mean a day of mixed weather, with sunny spells being followed by showers.

Madrid and its surrounding areas may see a similar pattern of spring unrest.

Packing for the capital can be a good idea, but it is better to avoid extremes. It is possible to pack a lightweight jacket, sunglasses, and an umbrella on the same trip.

This is spring in Spain. Conditions can quickly change, especially in the interior where heat during the day can cause afternoon instability.

The Mediterranean and South are in for some good news

Early forecasts are more favourable for those who want a classic holiday experience.

During the same weekend, weather conditions may be more stable in parts of southern and eastern Spain. Destinations such as Alicante Valencia Murcia Malaga Andalusia and Andalusia could benefit from this. Many people travel to these areas for the beaches, golf or sun.

Many travellers prefer mild temperatures to intense heat. The Spanish calendar is usually at its best during this time. It is warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities, but not too hot.

Early May is a great time to travel for expats, retired people and visitors who don’t like the extreme heat of July and August.

Spain has different seasons all at once

Spain has rarely had a singular weather event. One part of Spain can experience rain and temperatures as low as 15C, while another region may enjoy sunshine and temperatures up to 26C.

The Atlantic systems usually affect the northern and western regions first, whereas the Mediterranean side tends to be calmer. The inland areas will then react differently due to altitude and temperature fluctuations.

That is why broad headlines about ‘Spain weather’ can be misleading. The right week is often more important than the right area.

What can happen after the bank holidays?

The trend of the coming days indicates that more fronts will continue to move in from the West.

Those areas on the eastern coast, however, will be more stable. Storms can also be expected in the central zone during the second week in May, especially if warmer air is building inland.

It is not unusual for late spring to behave in this way.

May is a month of transition. Summer appears, then quickly disappears.

What travelers should do now

Nobody should cancel their plans because of a forecast that is far in the future. It is a good guide if you book now.

The Mediterranean coast, and some parts of the South are the best bets for dry weather. You can still visit northern Spain if you enjoy its food, scenery, and cool climate. Just plan your trip around the possibility of showers.

The best of Spain’s trips are often made in poor weather. A rainy lunch in San Sebastián or a cloudy walk in Galicia can still beat staying at home.

Early verdict

It is easy to see the picture at this point. The north and northwest of Spain could be wetter. The central areas could be mixed. South and East may have the best. This difference may be more significant than ever, especially with millions of people planning getaways.
